The trend of flower gardening is not limited to the affluent; it’s a hobby that’s becoming increasingly popular among those looking for a creative outlet and a way to connect with nature.

“Chaos gardening” is a term used to describe the act of scattering flower seeds at random and seeing what happens. It’s a fun and creative way to get started with flower gardening, and it’s gaining popularity on TikTok.

Lydia Millen, a UK-based influencer with over 1.6 million followers, has seen a significant increase in interest in flower gardening among her audience. “I think with everyone being online so much these days, a lot of us are looking for ways to unplug and reconnect with more creative hobbies and the outdoors,” says Millen. “I think people are drawn to flower gardening in particular for a similar reason I am—it’s beautiful. It can also be lower effort and more approachable than growing fruits and vegetables.”

For Millen, tending to her flowers is a way to escape the stresses of her fast-paced career and find balance. “I got into my career very much in the girl-boss era,” she says. “I still think that that was a really empowering moment as a woman, but… I lacked that balance of enjoying my career, and also having those grounding moments and that ability to regain perspective.”

She continues: “Once you really think about how many organisms there are just in, like, a handful of soil, it really puts it into perspective.”

The focus on simplicity and self-sufficiency in flower gardening is also a reflection of the current economic climate.
